7th Grade

Middle School is a time to learn and practice skills necessary for all aspects of education. While reading great works of literature, we will emphasize analyzing, writing, evaluating, expanding vocabulary and using proper grammar.  Class time will incorporate introduction and practice of skills and discussion of themes. Homework will oftentimes require application of skills and completion of projects started in class.

AREAS OF STUDY:
  • Study Skills—Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills help you become organized and prepared for future studies in high school.

  • Vocabulary—The goal is to bring words out of your passive vocabulary into your active vocabulary.

  • Writing—Writing is an essential life skill. You will learn to create strong, well-organized paragraphs and short papers. You will also learn the basics of research.

  • Language Study—Learning the parts of speech, sentence structure and word usage will give you the tools to become better speakers and writers.

  • Literature—Literature will teach you more about the world in which we live and the people we share it with. We will learn about different types of literature, and we will learn how to evaluate and apply what we read.
Our next novel of study is Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Later, we will study drama in The Miracle Worker. I have found that ordering with a group from Amazon is quite cost effective since you save in shipping and can even buy used paperbacks. Please make sure to have Roll of Thunder as we start the new year.

6th Grade

Since our last descriptive essay, we have been in the study of a novel concentrating heavily on reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar. The class is starting  an essay now on theme in regard to A Wrinkle in Time. The theme paper requires some analysis of the author's message, with my guidance, of course. Students will have to verbalize possible messages from this novel and then put one message into words in a sophisticated method. The students will be working in class for some of this writing with the laptop computers and some time at home for polishing and editing. This way, I am closely involved with the writing process and can offer help as the students move along, and they should begin relying less on help from home. During our work on this formal writing assignment, we practice grammar and sentence structure quite specifically. In our language arts class, we have a blend of written expression, verbal expression, mechanics, basic comprehension, vocabulary building, and more.

Thank you for partnering with me in this process. I am enthusiastic about the new year starting.

Holes and A Single Shard are two novels you might want to purchase ahead of time as we will study them this semester.
